Latter-day SaintsThe Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, commonly called the Mormon Church, was established by Joseph Smith in 1830. Jesus Christ is the center of Mormon worship. Mormons believe mortals are created in God’s image and are His spirit children. Mormons maintain that Jesus loves people of all nations, races and religions. Sharing their faith with others is important and encouraged. They believe that if people do not learn and accept Christ’s teachings in this life, they will have a chance in the next. Death, Mormons believe, is another step in God’s plan and that, hereafter, families can be united eternally.
The Holy Bible as well as the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants and the Pearl of Great Price comprise Mormon scripture. The latter three consist of translations and divine revelations received by Joseph Smith, whom Mormons revere as a prophet. Members of the faith participate in rituals, such as baptism, administered by those who hold the priesthood authority of Christ. The church is directed by a lay clergy. Mormons strive for Christ-like attributes in their lives, such as meekness and charity, and seek to know, love and serve their fellowmen and Jesus.
